Scottsdale is a city situated in the eastern part of Maricopa County, Arizona, United States. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and lies at the foot of the picturesque McDowell Mountains. The city is bordered by Phoenix to the west, the Tonto National Forest to the north, the McDowell Mountains to the east, and the Salt River to the south. Scottsdale is renowned for its luxury resorts, championship golf courses, and high-end boutiques.
Its business district is a hub for arts and crafts and features Arizona-oriented fashion alongside the latest offerings from Milan and Paris. The city is home to some of Arizona's best luxury resorts, many of which are clustered around Camelback Mountain. Scottsdale Fashion Square offers an Old Town Scottsdale lifestyle with approximately 2 million square feet of luxury retail space. The downtown trolley runs through downtown Scottsdale, while the neighborhood trolley connects downtown Scottsdale to South Scottsdale neighborhoods and Tempe's own free public circulator, Tempe Orbit on Roosevelt and Scottsdale Road.
In 1999, a second campus was opened at Scottsdale Airpark to serve the business community in north Scottsdale. Scottsdale was once home to a German prisoner of war camp at the intersection of Scottsdale and Thomas Roads in what is now Papago Park. The city is located in Maricopa County, one of two counties in the Phoenix metropolitan area, which is also Arizona's capital. Every year since 1954, Scottsdale has hosted the Scottsdale Jaycees Parada del Sol.
Scottsdale Fashion Square is one of the 30 largest malls in the country and features exclusive retail and luxury. The city also has several art districts including Kierland Commons and Scottsdale Quarter in North Scottsdale, and Scottsdale Main Street Arts District with its diverse collection of styles and genres, as well as Marshall Way Arts District and Old Town district with its touristy Western-themed atmosphere and Scottsdale Museum of Contemporary Art.
